For "Fun Mallard" I found myself working with techniques I've used in my music before but in a somewhat different context. I'm still using lots of overlapping melodic phrases of different lengths, pulse-based rhythmic complexity, and mostly electronic textures. At some point, however, I began thinking of it as a "funk" record. I know that sounds like a bad idea, but I think funk gets an unfair reputation. There was lots of really great truly experimental music made under the guise of "funk", and I like to think that Fun Mallard continues this tradition. Therefore, I found Fun Mallard to be more embracing of dissonance, ambiguous tonality, improvisatory playing, and non-pitched textures than in my other pop music.
